Adjustable coil suspension makes the ride smoother than many other e scooters in the top categories, and this scooter is capable of going much faster than legally allowed in a public location.

Before you start adding scooter products to your shopping cart, there’s some things you should know first. We’ve prepared a summary for you to start with, but it’s important to make yourself aware of all the issues.

Can you ride electric scooters in Sydney?

The NSW Centre for Road Safety currently states “Powered foot scooters and skateboards cannot be registered and can only be used on private land”.

So electric scooters generally may not be used on roads, and are not legal to ride on public footpaths or other public places.

The rules DO allow for your foot scooter to be used on footpaths, and designated bike lanes with certain conditions. So in this case, human power is mightier than a motorised scooter!

So where CAN you ride them around Sydney? Please be sure to check with your local authorities – Department of Transport for NSW, and follow their advice on riding an electric scooter, as well as the rules applying to foot scooters. Remember that e scooters are different to e bikes, while they’re all a wheeled recreational device, there are different rules.

Suggested locations where you can ride your electric scooter

  • Private Property – your own backyard
  • Sydney Park Cycling Centre at Sydney Park, St Peters
  • Heffron Pedal Park, Maroubra
  • Campbelltown Bicycle Education & Road Safety Centre
  • Park tracks
  • Offroad tracks

Sydney’s climate generally allows scooter riding year-round. Like the rest of Australia, severe thunderstorms are most likely Oct–Mar, but Sydney’s winter is relatively mild.

So you’d like to ride an electric scooter in Adelaide?

We love our scooters! iScoot has an excellent range to choose from, and we can help you choose the best scooter to match your needs. Whether you’re looking to improve your daily commuting times or experience, wanting the most powerful scooter on the market, or would like to enjoy more of this beautiful city – there’s a scooter for you.

Before you start adding scooter products to your shopping cart, there’s some things you should know first. We’ve prepared a summary for you to start with, but it’s important to make yourself aware of all the issues.

Can you ride electric scooters in Adelaide?

Please make sure you read the relevant legal restrictions, as an e scooter is a little different to other transport such as e bikes, or bicycles and skateboards. Adelaide and South Australia on the whole is particularly conservative regarding e scooter laws currently, leaving private property the best place for riding e scooters. Foot scooters are a great travel option, however, and are generally allowable throughout South Australia.

Two separate e scooter trials are ongoing – Adelaide & North Adelaide, and along the Coast Park Trail and we look forward to a successful outcome. Outside of these areas, electric scooters may only be used on private property only. The scooter trial area centres on Adelaide, with the City of Charles Sturt, City of West Torrens, and Port Adelaide taking part in a separate trial area.

A wheeled recreational device that is not fitted with a motor and is propelled solely by human power or gravity can be used on footpaths, bike/pedestrian tracks, parks and in some circumstances on roads. Foot scooters are awesome fun, and great physical activity for all ages – contact our customer service team for a scooter that’s right for you.

Adelaide has warm, sunny weather for most of the year, making it a great place to be out and about. SA has an extensive variety of bicycle tracks, which are great for foot scooters (and hopefully, e scooters once the trial is completed!) You can access a map of popular tracks here and the South Australian Government has even published blog articles on popular trails.

With so many beautiful wine regions to choose from, you’ll never be short of a picture-perfect winery or vineyard to check out.

Suggested locations where you can ride your electric scooter
  • Private Property – your own backyard
  • Vineyards (with permission)
  • River Torrens Linear Park Trail, Adelaide Metro area (foot scooters)

Outside Adelaide’s Metro Area

  • Riesling Trail, Clare Valley – Stretching from Auburn to Barinia, the Riesling Trail takes in farmland, vineyards and wooded areas and the inclines are quite gentle. With plenty of cellar doors and cafes dotted along the way, you won’t need to search for somewhere to take a rest break!
  • McLaren Vale Wine Region – Coast to Vines Rail Trail is a great fit for families and beginner riders, as the inclines are slight at best.
  • Beach Foreshore – please visit the relevant local council website for information

In South Australia, it is normally illegal to ride an e scooter on the road, footpath, bicycle track, or anywhere other than private property. Under South Australian law, electric scooters are considered motor vehicles, with the relevant SA Transport law explaining “operating a motor vehicle requires a driver’s licence, registration and compulsory third party insurance.

As these devices [electric scooters] do not meet the safety standards under the Australian Design Rules they are not eligible for registration.” So Private Property only is the best place to for riding e scooters, particularly within Adelaide.

Adelaide and North Adelaide e scooter trial

The SA Government has recently announced an e scooter trial, available in Adelaide and North Adelaide. We know we’re not the only people to eagerly await the outcome of the trial, and look forward to subsequent changes to legislation regarding scooters in South Australia.

E scooter trial along the Coast Park Trail

Electric scooters are also being trialled along the Coast Park trail, and several local Government councils are participating. Port Adelaide Enfield, City of Charles Sturt and, City of West Torrens. More information can be found on their websites.

Riding in Tasmania

A motorised scooter cannot travel faster than 10km/h in Tasmania, and must have a power output of no more than 200 watts. If these stipulations are not met, the electric scooter is deemed to be a motor vehicle. However, electric scooters cannot be registered as motor vehicles in Tasmania as they fail to meet the minimum safety requirements. As such, any e-scooter that has a power output of more than 200 watts can only be used on private property in Tasmania. Please see info from the Tasmanian department of Transport here.

So you’d like to ride an electric scooter in Canberra?

We love our scooters! iScoot has an excellent range to choose from, and we can help all Canberrans choose the best scooter to match your needs. Whether you’re looking to improve your daily commuting times, reduce parking costs or take a tour around Lake Burley Griffin; if you’re craving the most powerful scooter in Canberra, or would like to slow down and enjoy more of this beautiful city – there’s a scooter in our range for you.

Before you start adding scooter products to your shopping cart, there’s some information you should know first. We’ve prepared a summary for you to start with, but it’s important to make yourself aware of all the issues.

Can you ride electric scooters in Canberra?

The ACT Government now allows e scooters (and other personal mobility devices such as segway-like devices and e-skateboards) to be used in the ACT. Electric scooters provide a healthy and affordable mode of transport around our nation’s capital city, but there are some common sense restrictions surrounding e scooter use in Canberra.

  • You must wear an approved bicycle helmet while riding your e scooter anywhere in the ACT.
  • You can ride your scooter on shared paths, bike paths, the bicycle side of separated paths and footpaths.
  • You cannot ride your e scooter on the road, unless there is no footpath or nature strip available or they are impractical to use.
  • You must give way to pedestrians and keep to the left as with vehicle road rules.
  • Show courtesy to other path users and ride to the conditions. The speed limit is 15km h for footpaths and 25km h on shared/bike paths. You must slow down to 10km h when using a crossing, be prepared to stop, keep left and give way to pedestrians. Please ride more slowly around others, or vehicles.
  • You must not be impaired by alcohol or drugs, operate mobile phone devices or carry any passengers.
  • Children under the age of 12 must be supervised by an adult.
  • ACT rules differ from NSW so as soon as you cross the border leaving Canberra, you’re subject to NSW regulations.

Canberra’s relatively dry climate is great for e scooters, but you will need to look out for those cold, wet days occasionally, as well as the surprise thunderstorms. E scooters don’t mix with water, so it’s important to keep this is mind. The cooler temperatures mean it’s hardly ever too hot to scoot, however you may need to invest in some thermal clothing to keep you warm as you zoom around the fun parts of our capital. An e scooter may be particuarly good for the morning school run, as you and your children will arrive faster than on a bicycle.

The inner city of Canberra is relatively flat, which is great for electric scooter riders, but you’ll find a few steeper inclines as you travel out into the suburbs – so keep in mind that you will either need an electric scooter that can handle hills, or something light enough to be taken onto alternative transport options such as buses or the new light rail system. Scooting up hills can drain your batteries, so be sure you get a model with extra batteries available, or a hot-swap one. And if you’re coasting down hills, then check your brakes frequently (you don’t want to end up being a story on the local news!).

Suggested locations where you can ride your electric scooter

  • Lake Burley Griffin, and around the Parliamentary Triangle
  • Kingston Foreshore (when there’s not crowds of people)
  • National Arboretum, Australian National Botanic Gardens
  • Stromlo Forest Park
  • Lake Ginninderra
  • Belconnen Skate Park
  • Park tracks
  • Off road tracks

In Canberra, from 1 July 2017, the ACT Government allows a personal mobility device (such as a Segway or Segway-type device) to be used in the ACT. There are strict rules and regulations applying to the use of these devices. Any breach of these rules and regulations may result in an infringement notice being issued by a police officer, with a penalty attached.

From 20 December 2019, the framework for personal mobility devices was amended to include e-scooters and other similar devices. There are restrictions on the weight, speed, dimensions and power of scooters that may be used, but they are generally allowed around Canberra.

They are permitted on footpaths and bicycle paths, but not roads or bicycle lanes There are variable speed limits dependant on driving circumstances (25km h on shared/bike paths), there are age restrictions, you must wear a helmet.

Riding in NT

In the Northern Territory, a motorised foot scooter is typically a wheeled recreation device equipped with an engine or motor of some description. Motorised scooters with a power output greater than 200 watts are defined as motor vehicles in the NT Motor Vehicles Act. As motor vehicles, motorised scooters used on roads, or in public places, need to be registered and ridden by licensed riders. However, motorised scooters are not designed or manufactured to comply with registration requirements and national safety standards for road vehicles, such as Australian Design Rules (ADRs). Therefore, they cannot be granted registration for on-road use and may not be ridden on public roads or places open to the public (including footpaths, bike paths, carparks, etc.
